About
Technology Should Create Opportunity.
FreeLaptop.org began with a simple observation: enormous numbers of laptops are replaced while many people still struggle to access a computer.
The idea
The goal is to build a bridge between those two realities.
Instead of viewing every unwanted laptop only as electronic waste, FreeLaptop.org asks a different question:
“Can this computer help someone else first?”
It is not a complicated idea, but it changes what happens to a machine. A laptop headed for a recycling bin gets inspected instead. One that will not power on gets checked for parts that can revive another. One that still works gets cleaned up, prepared, and handed to someone who has been managing without.
That is the whole operation: collect what is no longer wanted, be realistic about what each device can still do, and move the usable ones toward people who need them.
Mission and vision
What we are working toward.
Mission
Expand access to computing while encouraging reuse of existing technology.
Vision
A future where usable computers are kept in circulation and lack of hardware is less of a barrier to education, employment, and participation in modern life.
Values
Six things we try to hold to.
Accessibility
A computer should not be the thing standing between someone and school, work, or services.
Reuse
Hardware that already exists has already been paid for environmentally. Use it.
Dignity
Recipients are people solving a practical problem, not subjects of a charity story.
Privacy
We ask for the minimum we need, and we take data on donated drives seriously.
Practicality
Repairs, matches, and logistics that actually work beat plans that sound impressive.
Transparency
We say what we can and cannot do, including when the answer is no.
Where things stand
FreeLaptop.org is a technology reuse initiative. We are not a registered 501(c)(3) or other tax-exempt organization, we are not a government program, and we do not represent that donations are tax-deductible. If that changes, this page will say so directly.
We would rather under-claim than overstate. You will not find distribution totals, environmental statistics, or partner logos on this site that we cannot stand behind. What you will find is a clear description of what we do, what we accept, and what we cannot promise.
