Terms of Use

These terms describe what you can and cannot expect from FreeLaptop.org, whether you are requesting a laptop, donating one, or transferring equipment on behalf of an organization.

Last updated: August 30, 2026

Using this site

By using FreeLaptop.org or submitting any form on it, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not submit information through this site.

Submitting a form does not create a contract, a reservation, a partnership, or an obligation on either side unless we separately agree to one in writing.

Laptop requests are not guaranteed

Submitting a laptop request does not guarantee that a laptop will be provided. We cannot guarantee a device, a specification, a model, an operating system, a delivery method, a queue position, or a date.

Availability depends entirely on what has been donated recently, the condition of those devices, and how many requests are outstanding. We may be unable to fulfil a request at all, and we are not obliged to give a reason.

Availability varies

The number and type of devices we can offer changes constantly. Pickup, drop-off, shipping, and local distribution options vary by location and volume and may be unavailable in your area. Nothing on this site should be read as a commitment that a particular option will be available to you.

How donated equipment is handled

Equipment transferred to FreeLaptop.org may be reused, repaired, refurbished, reconfigured, disassembled for components, combined with other equipment, recycled, or otherwise handled according to operational needs. We decide the appropriate outcome for each device.

A device you donate may be given to a recipient, used to repair another machine, held as spare parts, or sent to electronics recycling. We do not guarantee that any specific donated device will be refurbished, distributed, or provided to a particular person or type of recipient.

Donor responsibilities

  • You are responsible for backing up any information you want to retain before transferring a device. Once equipment is transferred, we cannot recover files, photographs, or documents for you.
  • You should remove personal data and sign out of and disassociate all accounts before donating, including operating-system accounts, cloud services, activation locks, firmware or BIOS passwords, and device-management enrolment.
  • You confirm that you own the equipment or are authorised to transfer it, and that it is not subject to a lease, loan, lien, or third-party claim.
  • You should not transfer equipment containing another party’s confidential or regulated data without having handled it appropriately first.

We address storage drives during intake as described in How It Works, but your own preparation is the most reliable protection for your information, and it remains your responsibility.

Transfers are final

Donations are voluntary and, once equipment has been transferred to FreeLaptop.org, ownership passes to us. FreeLaptop.org does not guarantee recovery, return, or retrieval of donated equipment after transfer, and we may have already processed, disassembled, or recycled a device by the time a return is requested.

If you change your mind, contact us as early as possible and we will tell you honestly whether anything can be done.

Condition of devices provided to recipients

Devices provided to recipients are used and refurbished. They may show cosmetic wear including scratches, scuffs, faded keys, worn casings, or mismatched components. Batteries in used laptops have reduced capacity and may need replacement.

Equipment is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. We do not provide ongoing technical support, repairs, replacement parts, or software licensing beyond what is installed at the time of distribution, unless we state otherwise for a specific device.

No fees

FreeLaptop.org does not charge recipients for laptops and will never ask you for payment details, deposits, or processing fees. If someone requests payment claiming to represent us, it is not us — please tell us about it.

Tax status and deductibility

FreeLaptop.org does not represent that it is a registered 501(c)(3) or other tax-exempt organization, and does not represent that donations are tax-deductible unless and until applicable tax-exempt status is confirmed. Donors should consult their own tax adviser regarding deductibility.

Accurate information

Please give accurate information in our forms. Requests or offers that are misleading, duplicated, automated, or submitted in bad faith may be declined without response.

Service availability can change

FreeLaptop.org is an evolving initiative. Service availability, geographic coverage, accepted equipment types, processes, and these terms can change or be discontinued at any time without notice. Content on this site is provided for general information and may be updated or corrected.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, FreeLaptop.org is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses arising from the use of this site, the use of equipment provided, the transfer of donated equipment, or any inability to provide a device.

Questions

If anything here is unclear, ask through the contact form and we will explain it in plain language.
