FAQ

Questions, Answered Plainly.

If something here is unclear, or your situation is not covered, ask us directly — we would rather answer than have you guess.

Requesting a laptop

Requesting a laptop

  • Is the laptop really free?

Yes. There is no cost to request a laptop and no cost if you receive one. We do not charge fees, deposits, shipping charges, or “processing” costs, and we will never ask you for payment or banking information. If someone contacts you asking for money on our behalf, it is not us.

  • Are laptops guaranteed?

No. Availability depends entirely on what has been donated recently and what condition those devices are in. Submitting a request does not guarantee that a laptop will be available, and we cannot promise a date or a place in a queue.

  • Who can request a laptop?

Anyone who needs a computer and cannot reasonably obtain one themselves. That includes students, job seekers, people in training programs, low-income households, and community members. We do not ask for proof of income, immigration status, or medical information — we ask you to describe your situation in your own words.

  • What kind of laptop will I receive?

A used, refurbished machine suitable for everyday tasks: web browsing, documents, email, coursework, applications, and video calls. It will have been tested and prepared, and it may show cosmetic wear such as scuffs or a faded keyboard. Specifications vary with whatever has been donated.

  • Can I choose the model?

No. You can tell us an operating system preference on the request form and we will take it into account, but devices are matched from what is actually on hand. Specific makes, models, or configurations cannot be requested or reserved.

Donating a laptop

Donating a laptop

  • Do you accept broken laptops?

Yes. Devices that do not power on, have cracked screens, or have other damage are still worth offering. Some can be repaired; others provide drives, batteries, screens, keyboards, and adapters that bring other laptops back into service.

  • Do you accept laptops without chargers?

Yes. A matching power adapter is genuinely helpful because it makes testing much easier, but it is not required. Mention on the donation form whether a charger is included.

  • Do you accept Chromebooks?

Yes. Note that many Chromebooks reach an update expiration date, after which they stop receiving Chrome OS updates. Those devices can still be useful — sometimes with an alternative operating system, sometimes for parts — so tell us the model and we will assess it.

  • Do you accept MacBooks?

Yes. Please make sure the device is signed out of your Apple account and that activation lock or a firmware password is removed before transfer. A locked MacBook is very limited in what it can be used for, even when the hardware is perfectly good.

  • Do you accept desktops?

Laptops are our focus because they are portable, self-contained, and do not require a separate monitor, keyboard, and mouse to be useful at home. We will consider desktops as part of a larger bulk transfer — mention them on the bulk form and we will tell you whether we can take them.

Organizations

Organizations

  • Can businesses donate computers?

Yes, and retired fleets are among the most useful donations we receive because the machines are often similar, well-maintained, and available in quantity. Use the bulk donation form so we can discuss volumes, timing, and handover.

  • Can electronics recyclers partner with you?

Yes. Recyclers see reusable laptops regularly, and a simple triage arrangement can redirect selected machines before they are dismantled. Start with the partnership form and we will discuss how it could work in practice.

  • Can you pick up laptops?

Sometimes. Pickup depends on location, volume, and what is available at the time, and it is generally more realistic for larger quantities. Tell us where you are and how many devices are involved and we will be straightforward about the options.

  • Can I donate 100+ laptops?

Yes — please do. Larger transfers are welcome and are exactly what the bulk donation form is for. Devices do not all need to be working, and mixed-condition lots are fine.

  • Do you accept laptops outside your local area?

Often, yes. Shipping can make sense for small numbers of devices, and freight can make sense for large ones. Tell us where the equipment is and how much there is, and we will let you know whether it is workable before you send anything.

Data and privacy

Data and privacy

  • What happens to my data?

Storage drives are addressed during intake, before a device continues through the process: the drive is erased, replaced, or removed depending on the machine. We describe our steps in plain language and do not claim certifications or standards we do not hold.

  • Should I erase my laptop first?

Yes, whenever you can. Back up anything you want to keep, sign out of your accounts, deauthorize the device where applicable, and reset it. Doing this yourself is the most reliable protection for your information. If the laptop will not boot, tell us and we will handle the drive at intake.

  • What happens if my laptop cannot be reused?

It is checked for usable components first. Parts that can keep other laptops running are recovered, and whatever remains is routed to electronics recycling rather than general waste. Nothing is quietly discarded.

Donations and tax

Donations and tax

  • Are donations tax-deductible?

FreeLaptop.org does not represent that donations are tax-deductible unless and until applicable tax-exempt status is confirmed. Donors should consult their own tax adviser regarding deductibility.
